Dalyan is a riverside town on a reed-lined channel that winds from Köyceğiz Lake to the sea. Above the river stand the striking Lycian-style rock tombs of ancient Kaunos, and river boats carry visitors to İztuzu Beach, a protected nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles.
Places to see
- Kaunos rock tombs Temple-fronted tombs carved high into the cliff face across the river, lit beautifully at dusk.
- Ancient Kaunos The ruins of a harbour city with a theatre, baths and city walls on the far bank.
- İztuzu Beach A long sandy spit between river and sea, protected for its nesting sea turtles.
- Sultaniye hot springs Thermal pools and mud baths on the shore of Köyceğiz Lake, reached by boat.
Things to do
- Take a river boat tour that combines the tombs, mud baths and İztuzu Beach
- Cover yourself in the famous mud and rinse off in warm spring water
- Watch the sunset over the rock tombs from the riverside promenade
- Look out for river crabs and turtles along the channel
- Dalyan is well under an hour from Dalaman, one of the shortest transfers in the region.
- İztuzu Beach is closed at night during the nesting season to protect the turtles.
- River boats are the easiest way to get around, so you do not need a car in town.
