Berat is a UNESCO-listed town in central Albania, often called the city of a thousand windows for its white Ottoman houses stacked on the hillside above the Osum River. A castle quarter that is still inhabited crowns the hill, with churches, mosques and narrow lanes. It is one of the most beautiful historic towns in the Balkans.
